Laura Beloff

Laura Beloff (Ph.D.) is an internationally acclaimed artist and researcher based in Finland. Working at the intersection of artistic production and academic inquiry, her practice is grounded in artistic research and interdisciplinary methodologies across art, science, and technology. Beloff’s conceptually rigorous and practice-led work has been exhibited widely across Europe and internationally, including at the Venice Biennale Extras (2007), Ars Electronica, and many other major art-and-technology events.
Between 2021-2023, she realized a commissioned public art project in Helsinki exploring artificial and biological intelligence, robotics, sound, and the natural environment. Her recent research focuses on the increasingly porous boundary between biology and technology. The outcomes take the form of exhibited artworks, wearable artefacts, participatory and process-based installations, and experimental platforms that probe human relations to technology, biology, and to our increasingly technologized environment. The artistic research work is complemented by scholarly publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles, research papers, and invited book chapters. She chairs the rAt-research group at Aalto University, fostering transdisciplinary dialogue and practice.
Beloff is internationally active through collaborative research projects, artistic productions, conference organization (including Politics of Machines, POM), editorial work, PhD supervision and evaluation, academic assessments, and service on art juries and funding panels. A frequent invited speaker, she has received awards and grants for artistic excellence and research activities.
She is currently Associate Professor in the Department of Art & Media at Aalto University and serves as Vice-Dean for Artistic and Creative Practices at Aalto School of Art, Design and Architecture. Previously, she was Associate Professor and Head of the Doctoral School at IT University of Copenhagen (2012–2019). She received a five-year artist grant from the Finnish state (2007–2011), was full Professor at the Art Academy in Oslo (2002–2006), and Visiting Professor at the University of Applied Arts, Vienna (2009, 2011).
