Hege Tapio is a Norwegian artist, curator, and researcher whose work operates at the intersection of art, technology, biology and the life sciences. Her practice explores how biological systems, machines, and technological infrastructures increasingly shape the conditions of contemporary life. Through speculative artistic research, Tapio investigates the political, ethical, and affective dimensions of emerging technologies, particularly where living systems and technical systems converge. For more than two decades she has developed research-driven artworks and transdisciplinary projects examining how bodies, materials, and metabolic processes become entangled with technological systems of measurement, extraction, and control. Her work often engages biochemical materials, speculative design strategies, and critical narratives to interrogate dominant technological imaginaries and the economic and political logics embedded in contemporary techno-scientific culture.

Tapio is the founder and artistic director of i/o/lab – Center for Future Art, an independent platform for experimental art and transdisciplinary collaboration, through which she has been actively engaged in networks for art–science practices in Norway and the Nordic region. Through i/o/lab she initiated and curated the Article Biennale (2006–2016), an international platform for artistic engagement with electronic art, science, and emerging technologies. She has also played an important role in the development of bioart discourse in Norway. In 2008 she initiated the country’s first Bioart Masterclass in collaboration with SymbioticA, and later contributed to the development of the Norwegian BioArt Arena (NOBA).
